“Stop the Dumping!” Says Rotary Club of Liamuiga

South Friars Bay, St. Kitts – On Saturday June 20, 2015, members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga journeyed to South Friars Bay for the Club’s third annual coastal clean-up project. Partnering with the Club for the third consecutive year were members of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Staff Association.
Shortly after sunrise, groups of 2 and 3 persons began spreading out and scouring the coastline area and the one mile stretch of beach. In the end, over 25 large 30-gallon garbage bags were filled with trash and other debris was gathered.
“The Rotary Club of Liamuiga recognizes that keeping our beaches clean not only preserves our marine and coastal environment but also serves to protect human health and prevents damage to our economy as many livelihoods depend on pristine beaches and oceans,” said Dr Marcus L Natta, Rotary Club of Liamuiga President.
“However, there is simply no logical reason why in our clean-up we should find debris such as refrigerators, electric fans, patio chairs and even artificial Christmas trees discarded deep within the sea grape trees. The Rotary Club of Liamuiga calls on all persons to enjoy our beautiful beaches responsibly and to stop the dumping!” President Natta admonished.
The Rotary Club of Liamuiga extends sincerest thanks to the ECCB Staff Association for its continued partnership in this service project and the Parks & Beaches Unit for facilitating the removal of the collected trash.
