Basseterre, St. Kitts – With the correct, consecutive spelling of the words ‘luminous’ and ‘pictograph’,  Ms Gianna Phipps of the St. Kitts Seventh-Day Adventist Primary School emerged the champion of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga’s 2017 Primary school Spelling Bee Competition. Gianna outlasted her 20 other competitors during the recently held Spelling Bee, which was held at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium on Thursday November 2, 2017.

The atmosphere was electric with over 400 persons in the audience cheering on their favourite school and speller. After 8 rounds of intense and heart-pumping spelling prowess, 3 young ladies emerged from amongst their competitors. Gianna (the spelling bee champ) and tied for second place were Ms Suzannah Persaud of the George Moody Stuart Primary School and Ms Tahiyat Chy of the St. Kitts International Academy.
 
Spelling Bee champ Gianna received a lovely trophy, EC$1,000.00, cases of Sunquick and Sun Top juices, cases of Dasani water and Minute Maid juice, a case of Smalta and a EC$150 Harper’s office Depot gift voucher. The winning school St. Kitts Seventh-Day Adventist Primary received EC$1000.00 cash and the teacher who assisted Gianna in her preparations, Mrs. Yvette Blanchette received cash of EC$500.00. The second place spellers, schools and teachers who assisted spellers also received cash and in-kind prizes. All spellers received Rotary Club of Liamuiga certificates of participation and, refreshments and goodie bags compliments of RAM’S Supermarket (Seven Seas and Sun Top) and KOSCAB (Dasani and Minute Maid). The top ten spellers also each received gift vouchers compliments of TDC Group Ltd, Massy United Insurance and Harper’s Office Depot.
 
President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, Mr Chad Allen, praised the students for the courage and scholarly ambition for being a part of the competition. He encouraged them to continue to excel and highlighted that they are all winners. President Chad noted that the Club continues to support relief efforts for neighbouring islands in the aftermath of Hurricanes Maria and Irma. He added that upcoming projects include the Club’s Annual Christmas Hamper distribution to the less fortunate and book distribution initiative. The Club will close out the calendar year with its largest annual fundraiser, its New Year’s Charity Ball on December 31st at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.
