Basseterre, St. Kitts – 28th October 2024 – The Rotary Club of Liamuiga successfully hosted its 18th Annual Primary School Spelling Bee on Thursday, 24th October, at 4:00 PM at the ECCB Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium. This exciting event brought together bright young minds from 17 primary schools across St. Kitts, showcasing not only their remarkable spelling talents but also their poise under pressure.

In front of a large and enthusiastic audience of over 300 parents, teachers, students, and well-wishers, the competition delivered a thrilling spectacle of intellect and perseverance. After a series of intense and nail-biting rounds, Xavier Agard of Beach Allen Primary School emerged victorious. He claimed the title by correctly spelling the challenging words Nomenclature and Juxtaposition consecutively, securing his place as the 2024 champion speller.

The event saw a fantastic display of talent, with the top honours awarded as follows:

· 1st Place: Xavier Agard – Beach Allen Primary School

· 2nd Place: Yanis Bowrin – St. Kitts International (SKI) Academy

· 3rd Place (tie): Zydane Thompson – Immaculate Conception Catholic School (ICCS)

· 3rd Place (tie): Kizarah Evans – Tyrell Williams Primary School

 

"The calibre of our young spellers was truly impressive, and we are incredibly proud of all the participants," said Ms Kaii Mills-Dias, President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga. "This event not only promotes literacy and builds confidence in our youth, but it also fosters a spirit of community and collaboration among schools. We are grateful for the continuous support of our partners and look forward to hosting this event for many more years to come."

 

Dr Geoffrey Hanley, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, was present to support the participants and praised the students for their dedication and courage. "To all our spellers, I say – you’ve already won by stepping up to this challenge. Your commitment to excellence is inspiring, and I encourage each of you to always do your best, no matter how difficult the task may seem."
